Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tad Ono on November 21, 2015:

I didn't know Dwayne in school but knew about his outstanding career while I was assigned to the Engineer Branch, OPO, in the late 60's/early 70's. Then, I got to work with him when he served as Okinawa area engineer and I as deputy Japan district engineer. Dwayne was a knowlegeable engineer and a great leader who was highly respected by both the US and Japanese civilians that worked for him. He was super competent and action oriented and treated everyone with respect. Dwayne continued his outstanding career and was promoted early several times. I next saw him while I served as Los Angeles district engineer and he as commander of Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg- a super prestigious position held only by those who had previously commanded a district. Dwayne was so impressive that the Executive Director of the Port of LA shortly after his visit, asked Dwayne if he was interested in leaving the Army to be his deputy. Port of LA was a key customer of the LA District, so Dwayne and I worked on a number of projects together. Dwayne was as highly respected there as he had been in Okinawa-smart, no-nonsence, super competent, action oriented, always positive and respectful of people. Dwayne Lee was truly an admirable man and it was my honor to have known and worked with him.
