Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tom hartman on November 30, 2006:

I was John's classmate through high school in Federal Way, WA. The fine personal qualities expressed by others in these eulogies were certainly evident in his youth. He was our Student Body President, our top male scholar and a captain of the football team. With all these achievements, he was the most humble and kindest fellow I knew back then.

When I met him some six years later at a local tavern we were two young single fellows about to start a new chapter in our lives: he having just served in the Vietnam War and I having served in the Peace Corps. John was still the same quiet, self-effacing guy. Thirty-four years later, at a high school reunion, I met John again. He was bound to the wheelchair but still was a joy to meet and talk with one last time. I'm lucky to have known John.
