Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kim Winkler on December 20, 2003:

I only knew John as a roomate during our yearling year at West Point. He, Mike Amrine, and I were roomates in Central Barracks.
From reading what all have written, John went on in life to affect more people in more ways than most of us can.
It was clear he was an exceptional person, even back then. I don't remember much, but what I do is still vivid.
Everything academically came so easy to him. Here we were, all in the top of our class academically, and John would come in the room while Mike and I were "struggling" and go to the heart of any math, physics, chemistry problem immediately. It was embarassing, and inspirational at the same time. I believe, that without this, neither Mike or myself would have worked as hard as we did.
And, he was a good roomate. There were no conflicts between the three of us (even back then the standard was two per room, not three) and a good person.
I don't remember any indication of what he would do with the rest of his life, but he did well. Would that we all could do the same.
My prayers, thoughts, remembrances.

Kim Winkler
