John Richard Clark

West Point, 1964

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Hal Winton on January 5, 2004:

John, Nancy, Barbara, and I dated together at West Point. My strong impression of John during those days was that he was a man who knew when to be serious about serious things and, conversely, when to be not so serious about not-so-serious things. There were plenty of items at West Point in the latter category; and certain members and activities of the Tactical Department were, from time to time, the recipient of John's pointed humor.

But on the other side of the ledger, John was a committed Christian and a fine Sunday School teacher. He was a joy to work with as a colleague and, like many others of his ilk, absolutely adored by the dependent children with whom he shared his genuine faith.

Being asked to serve as the best man in his and Nancy's wedding was a great honor. Although we did not stay closely in touch during the years after graduation, we did share one all-too-brief and very enjoyable reunion at the Army-UAB game in 2002.

The moving funeral service held for John at the Living Word Fellowship in Cleveland, Tennessee made me realize just how deep, genuine, and constant John's faith had remained over the years. But this service also revealed that the twinkle in John's eye and his punny sense of humor had not diminished at all from cadet days. There is something deeply satisfying when you realize that the good things you remember about your friends from days on the Hudson's banks have not lessened over the span of time but have, if anything, become even more pronounced. If this is one measure of a life well lived, John Clark lived a very good life.
