Be Thou At Peace

Posted by P. Jan Hughey on September 25, 2007:

Bernie was one of my plebe roommates in I-2 during our first semester. He, Kenny Sprague and I were tossed together because we were all taking Russian. That was all that I had in common with them. They were both "poop schoolers", knew all about USMA and the Army and wore stars. I knew nothing about the military and earned a turnout star in Russian. Notwithstanding our differences, I loved Bernie. He was smart but equally irreverent-attributes, that when combined, often had him in the sights of the upperclassmen and accounts, at least in part, for his being a member of the Century Club. All of my memories of Bernie are of a man of humor, intelligence, charm and friendliness. He was an unending source of support and assistance to his less talented classmates. The world is a lesser place with the loss of this fine man. My most heart-felt prayers go to his family and other friends. Jan Hughey
