| I met Bernie on the first day of Beast Barracks in early July 1960. I was still 17 years old and totally out of my comfort zone when I ended up meeting Bernie and Tom Anthony in our new cadet room in South Area. I immediately realized that Bernie knew what was going on and to my good fortune he took me under his wing and helped me immensely during the first days and weeks of Beast Barracks. Bernie was always cheerful and had a little of an "attitude" that I really admired. He was my friend and although I never saw him again after we graduated I felt a big lump in my throat at the news of his death. To his family I would add my sorrow at the loss of a great guy but more importantly I would add to the spirit of the celebration of his life. Rest in Peace Bernie. Well done! |
