Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gerald C. Werner on April 29, 2010:

My memory of Gary goes back to the earliest days...I believe even to the exams taken before admission at West Point. Time does compress and fog the memory, though.

I do know this for sure....meeting Gary and others from the south was my first inkling as a Yankee (a term that was easily applied to us from the North) that memories of the War between the States still lingered deeply in the hearts of the South, including Gary. It was one for me of the 'growing up", insightful experiences at West Point....the long legacy of war.

But I learned much more from Gary. The military traditions coursed deeply in his veins and he lived it and he inspired me and (others no doubt)... a 17 year old fresh from Wisconsin, who understood little of that tradition.

Gary, as I knew him, lived the code of a gentleman in every respect....never boastful, quiet spoken, self-assured, intelligent, respectful of women and a strong friend to be counted on. I remember his military skill and toughness as being superior. Blond hair and to the best of my memory, steely blue eyes...a handsome devil he was!

A piece of our hearts is with you now on this new journey.

Be at Peace, Gary! We will miss you.

Your classmate,

Jerry
