Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Eugene S. Fetchina on September 8, 2010:

USMA Cadets and Grads have always had and always will have a special place in my heart.
It has been an honor and a privilege to know so many of the Best of the Best and The BEST - James Gantsoudes, USMA' 64 .

During the 1960's and 70's I helped found the Orthodox Christian Chapel Section at USMA and at various times I served as Administrator and Chaplains Assistant. That is how I got to know CIC Jim Gantsoudes.
When I first Saw Jim with all his Stripes , my reaction was "WOW" and years later, that is still my reaction when I think of Jim.

Jim was one of the founders of the Chapel Section and his hard work made our efforts a wonderful success. Despite his endless duties as Cadet Captain, and other activities, he always found time, energy and plenty of inspiration to offer our members and me.

In my life, I have known many military officers, dignitaries, royals, clerics and Patriarchs. but Jim stands head and shoulders above them all. Jim always had a smile for everyone, and even a hug, but what I remember most is his " Never Give up" spirit. Jim is an inspiration to everyone who know him.

While I was never a "Comrade in Arms" in the true military sense, I cherish having had the opportunity to Know Jim and to be able to call him and many of you "Friend."

I know we all shed a tear mourning the temporal loss of one who means so much to us all, but we also must smile at the mention of his name, and pray for him, for his family and friends.

May the fond memories we have and share give us the strength of character to continue to follow his lead and honor his spirit and accomplishments .

Here is to Jim and the Long Gray Line. May the memory of our fallen comrades and Jim be eternal.
