Be Thou At Peace

Posted by J B Holeman on July 25, 1999:

Syl and I got to know Al and Maria when we were both Captains stationed at Ft Belvoir. After tours in Vietnam, we were both starting our families. Since neither of us were engineers and not assigned to the School, we bonded together with assorted other tenants ( armor, infantry, artillery, ordinance, etc). As fortune would have it, we (our wives) were very successful with child bearing and we both had a boy and girl about the same time. During this three year period, we had great fun; the parties were truly lively and a little gross ( remember we weren't engineers). Al and I frequently commiserated about how to deal with wives with strong Italian personalities. (None of our schemes were successful, but we had fun, and Maria and Syl kept us in line.)

Until about eight years ago, we both continued to reside off and on in Northern Virginia. While our jobs took us in different directions, we continued to stay in touch, though less frequently than the Belvoir years. Now with this news both Syl and I are deeply saddened.

I'll remember the fun times, trying to cope with Italian wives, and the pictures of both. Our hearts and prayers go out to Maiia and the kids. Al was a true and steady friend. He will be sorely missed.
