Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steve Ehart on July 12, 2012:

I hope Pete is able to access this website on his laptop in Heaven. I think he'll get a kick out of what I'm about to say.....

What do I remember about Pete Elson??? He always spoke to Lieutenants!! When Pete and I served together in the Wolfhounds, he was a captain, and I was at the bottom of the food chain---an Infantry Lieutenant Platoon Leader. Most reading this post will agree that the chasm between being a Lieutenant, and being a Captain (either real or imagined), could be as wide as the Grand Canyon. It all depended on who you were dealing with.

But not with Pete Elson. Pete loved people, and Pete REALLY loved soldiers. You didn't have to worry about Pete taking the time to ask you how things were going with you...how was your family...or how was that wounded troop of yours you just visited at the 12th Evac. It was a given, and it came from his heart---Pete cared. And you knew he cared.

And of course this carried over during Pete's command time. As Lieutenants, we had a great deal of respect for our company commanders. But that respect was earned...not given lightly or without justification. And we respected Pete Elson.

Pete loved life...Pete loved the Army...Pete loved his family...and Pete loved his God. RIP, Delta 6----your last patrol is over.

RANGERS LEAD THE WAY
