David Gardner Binney

West Point, 1964

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ann Muir on October 19, 2008:

I met Dave the first time I went to West Point for a date with Jimmy during yearling year. He was Jimmy's best man at our wedding, driving his 1964 TR-4 out to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and was godfather to our first child, Kate Muir Darby. I began fixing Dave up with dates including my sister, Jean. But the best job I ever did was to introduce him to Carolyn whom he fell in love with almost immediately and married in a lovely ceremony in the historic Christ Church with his sons, their families and many close friends attending. The next almost five years were Dave's happiest. He loved to travel and introduced Carolyn to many places she had never been. I believe Dave loved the planning for those trips as much as the trips themselves! He was always so anxious to get on the way, he scheduled their departures out of Charleston on the first flight of the day...6 a.m.! He and Carolyn visited Steve and Geoff and their families often. Dave enjoyed going to his grandsons' sports events. They are as competitive as he was! They would visit West Point and FBI friends and Dave was proud and thrilled to introduce Carolyn to his old buddies.

For a number of years Jimmy and I didn't see Dave, so the last five plus years have been particularly enjoyable for us. We got together for dinner, we went to Founders' Day dinners, we planned Charleston mini-reunions, we watched golf or football at George Cromartie's, we had sleepovers at Ben and Cathy Marino's on Kiawah, and we participated together in family and neighborhood activities. I am going to miss those times. I have treasured Dave's friendship for the last 47 years and will miss him very much.

"And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
And hold you in the palm of His Hand."
