Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Angelina Akdis - granddaughter on August 11, 2020:

There are not enough words to describe how much my grandfather means to me. He was - and forever will be my hero. One of the strongest, kindest, smartest men I will ever know. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by my grandpa - not only because I think he secretly knows the meaning of life and everything else going on in the world, but because of his deep love for his family and his passion for helping us. As a kid, I remember that he was our designated museum tour guide and that nobody could compare to his extensive knowledge of topics like Mayan history and the Silk Road. As I got older he became the person I would come to for math help and to edit my essays - when he was by my side, I always knew that I would be getting a good grade and making him proud. I was his Number One and was always striving to uphold and exceed the standards he set for me. I always try to live by his advice - like the 7 Ps (proper, prior, planning, prevents, pissed, poor, performance) and always thinking you can - and I feel that he is one of the only people in my life that truly deeply understands me. Grandpa knows all my secrets feelings. I came to him with the most trivial things like my boy problems, instagram photo ideas (where he always asked how many likes I got), and clothing choices; to deep topics like how I was feeling about having a sister to trying to get into organizations and schools. No matter what I needed, he always met my challenges face-on. And when I was facing those challenges, he was my biggest cheerleader. His favorite shirt was the t-shirt I designed for school and he always joked that my cooking was the best in the family. We like so many of the same things, like shortbread cookies (with lots of buuttaaahh), steak, dancing, history, and learning something every day. My grandpa introduced me to many of my passions and always made it a personal project to honor my interests. We have a secret language of our own and when we are together I feel like we could rule the world.

Grandpa, I love you so much. Thank you for all of our memories including but not limited to our road trips, serious discussions, Netflix parties and swimming games. You have shaped me into the person I am today and I hope that you will be proud of everything that I continue to do. I hope you are taking your trip around the world as we speak. Please look out for me in heaven.
Love your number one :)
Angelina
