Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gerald Werner on April 26, 2010:

I was terribly shocked to hear this sad and tragic news. I did not know until now the battle Bob was fighting with the forces of cancer.

Hadn't seen Bob since we graduated or perhaps left either Ranger or Airborne school in late 1964, though I always listened carefully to all the news about him. Knowing Bob was an experience that stuck with you.

My best memories and association with Bob were during our "Yearling" summer at Camp Buckner. Bob seemed a more mature and wizened fellow than many of us....a was a perfect fit for his job as class platoon sergeant (though someone may check me on his actual title).

My impression of Bob was forever imprinted on me during those Buckner days as a cool and inspiring influence...destined for great things. Bob had an unforgettable dry wit and loved a good laugh. I remember like it was yesterday one or two colorful expressions that got us up and going every morning. I cannot recall his "temperature" ever rising to anger or getting upset, even in the most stressful of times.

This is tough news that results in personal reflection! But I trust that Bob's spirit will lift our hearts as our journey continues.

Thanks for the memories, Bob!
