Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carl Magnell on January 15, 2015:

Peter was my roommate for most of our Cow and Firstie years. I recall the fall afternoon in 1962 when Ralph Corley and I were told that, due to "problems" with some of the Cow room assignments, we would get new roommates. I never asked (or learned) what those "problems" were but have never stopped being thankful for them.

Peter had an immense impact on me. I soon understood that he had qualities sorely lacking in most of our classmates including me. There was an awareness and sophistication unmatched, save for a few in our class, and an innate ability to quickly determine what really mattered, both to "survive" as a cadet and, more importantly, to develop as an individual.

I also learned that Peter had three unchangeable priorities, namely Phyllis, the financial sector and graduation. None were ever in doubt but the latter two could never come close to number one! Peter and Phyllis were blessed and fortunate to share so many years together, albeit, tragically, not enough.

My enduring image of Peter is sitting at the desk absorbed in the NY Times financial section, enjoying a morning cup of coffee. Yes, we enjoyed our coffeemaker, TV and popcorn popper (with help from our friendly BP).

Of all our 1964 classmates Peter had the most impact on me; it was a true privilege to know him and to share so many experiences and memories as his roommate.

God bless him now in eternity.
