Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Roy Jones on December 13, 1999:

Jeff was one of those classmates whose age and a little more experience in life helped our class as a whole weather the rough seas of plebe year and beyond. I always had the feeling about Jeff that he could see around the bend better than I could. I only recently found out Jeff was older by several years. That made me feel better . . . there was a reason he had his act together better than I did in those years.

I remember his work at so many of our socials set up by the Academy. I felt as though we were well taken care of by Jeff. On occasions when we met over the past 35 years, it was always warm and engaging. He was a classmate with whom I especially liked to get reacquainted. I spoke with Jeff several years ago when he was working in Russia. I was very happy he was still using the language we both learned (he more than I clearly) from Maj. Maladowitz. I used those skills, rough as they were, when traveling in Russia to a little village six years ago to adopt one of our sons, now 8. I have thought of Jeff frequently since I have a daily reminder of our Russian language beginnings and our conversations about his work in Russia when I look at our son Kolya (Nicholas).

Jeff was fun, a nice man in the best sense of the word, and provided such a steadying influence for the rest of us. I appreciate deeply his contribution to helping me and my classmates make it through the four years at West Point. I am heartsick over his loss at such a young age. I have prayed for his family and our classmates who loved him as well through my tears which flow freely as I write this. God bless you Jeff.
