Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Alan Russo on October 12, 2007:

On the evening of 10 May 1965, I was a rifle platoon leader in Company B, 3-325 Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. My platoon was in position securing a portion of the LOC, the main road through Santo Domingo that US forces were using for the movement of troops and supplies.
I received a call from the division headquarters asking if I could provide next of kin and other information about Lieutenant Hutchison. I was speechless at the request but finally recovered enough to refer the caller to Tom Kerns who was very close to Hutch.
Hutch, Tom and I had been in Company L-2 together during our last two years at West Point. Hutch was funny, gregarious, laid back, and he absolutely enjoyed being billeted in the Lost Fifties of North Area. In that part of the barracks, he was almost living outside of the cadet area, and he was left alone.
Hutch was the first combat loss to our class; and he was the second loss to the class from L-2. He has been missed in these intervening 40 plus years. He won't be forgotten by any who knew him.
