Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dennis Scott on October 9, 2008:

Charles T. Hutchison was my friend and mentor. I was in junior high school while Hutch was a cadet. He came back to our small town during summer leave and helped to run the playground for young children. Hutch worked one summer to prepare me for basketball the following winter. But when winter came, I joined the wrestling team. The last time I saw him was in the locker room at Kittanning High School as I was preparing for practice. That was Christmas 1963. He asked how basketball was going. Sadly, I told him that I had chosen wrestling over hoops - and I was embarrassed to tell him. He patted me on the head and said, "Just be the best wrestler out there!" I felt terrible, knowing that somehow I had let him down. That, I'm convinced, was not the case.

Ten years later, I raised my hand and swore to "defend and protect" along with my USMA classmates. I know Hutch was watching and he was proud of me. He has been the inspiration in all my life.
