Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steve Bettner on June 28, 2001:

While never in the same company, John and I crossed paths many times as Cadets, since we were in the same battalion, and on occasion classes. I always remember John as about as calm as anyone I have ever met. He was a gentleman in every regard, and always a good source for ideas and pleasant conversation. Our paths went separate ways after graduation, but of all things, at a 101st Airbrne Division staff meeting in Camp Eagle in mid-1968, there sits John. We were able to renew acquaintances half a world away, in a fairly hectic environment--Tet was winding down--and he looked and acted exactly the same as I remembered him. Laid back, but efficient and a friendly demeanor. His presence made my trips to Division Headquarters much more pleasant. I was truly saddened upon hearing of John's death as he was a great asset to the class, and one who has shared many wonderful thoughts. Godspeed.
