John Ward Arrington

West Point, 1964

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tom Harman on May 9, 1999:

John and I shared the dreaded room across the hall from the C-2 Company Orderly Room during that long first semester in 1960. During that fall, John provided my introduction to southern dialects and linguistics. He missed the food and comforts of home that fall, as did we all. He eagerly anticipated the visit from family scheduled for Christmas, promising they would bring bald peanuts for me to sample. I began to look forward to tasting this new form of peanut. The first day of Plebe Christmas, John brought a bag back to the room to share. We shared a long laugh when I expressed my surprise that bald was John's way of saying "boiled."John Arrington was one of the kindest, most gentle people I have ever known. He is missed.
