Tom was my mentor and my friend. When I was a cadet it took some time to get used to the idea that a senior officer could really care about me and want me to share time with his family and friends. He gave me copies of his poems and nurtured in me a love for the best of that form. He taught me most of all what it meant to be passionate about something. With him it was everything. Books, music, movies, his family, science. With me it is books, baseball, the Army. His marker in the West Point cemetary says only that he was a poet and a physicist.
