Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Larry Kallenberger on March 15, 2015:

Peter Howard was company commander of Co. B, 2d battalion of the 38th infantry, 2d Infantry Division and I was privileged to be his company clerk for a portion of that time. We became friends and talked often usually walking together in the field. He was a very thoughtful person who never talked about his injury but talked about how being a West Point graduate and Officer was not what he had always envisioned. It was the height of the military draft and many, if not most, of us didn't want to be there and he knew that. He had envisioned being an Army officer to lead men but he recognized that most of the soldiers in the unit were only there because we were forced to be there. Many of the senior NCO's at the time were racist and Captain Howard had nothing in common with them and was fair to all the men in the company. I have thought of him many times in my life. He was one of the brightest minds I came into contact with during my time in the Army. To me, he was everything a West Point officer should actually be to his men.
