I came upon this wonderful tribute as I researched Kala's (I think we nicknamed him "Kook") personal information that one of the men who served under him in Vietnam needed as he prepared to purchase an engraved paver brick to soon be placed in front of the 25th Infantry Division Association Memorial (www.25thmemorialfund.org) next to Division HQ at Schofield Barracks, HI. I was XO of B/1/14 Inf(Golden Dragons) when he arrived and was with us as we were the 1st to be deployed to Pleiku as part of the 25th's 3rd BDE Task Force. (We irreverent LT's called ourselves "The Bastard Brigade"). He served well and a photo I have of the two of us in front of the Base Camp "hooch" we seldom visited brings back many good memories. I began travel for the 25th IDA in the early 2000's and intended to look him up when I got to Hawaii, only to learn of his passing. Perhaps one day I will have the opportunity to share my regards for his service with his family. May he rest in peace. Thomas A. Jones President, 25th Infantry Division Association |
