Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Rafael DeJesus on December 1, 2016:

CPT Fred Scruggs was my B Company operations officer when I joined the 7th SFG(A) in Panama in 1974 as a 1LT. He sent me to HALO basic and Jump Master schools that year and later was my B-Team Commander when I commanded SFODAs-6 and 12. Under stressful times in Panama working for LTCs Bo Gritz and Roger Donlon, MAJ Scruggs kept his calm, soft-spoken Kentucky accent and led by setting the example. If things got screwed up, which sometimes they did at the ODA level, his harshest reprimand would be to say, "Ralph I wish you hadn't done that. Next, get your team to do it this way." I also served as his 7th Group XO and Deputy during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989-90. That's about 20 years of working for and knowing him. What wonderful opportunities and experiences I had working for CPT-COL Fred Scruggs: a generous, thoughtful, kind, highly knowledgeable, professional Special Forces Officer. A true quiet-warrior with Sandee and his kids always by his side.
