Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dave Bodde on July 3, 2020:

While at West Point, Paul and I were at opposite ends of the Corps (he was in L-1 and I in L-2) so we did not often intersect.

It wasn't until the winter of our First Class Year that I got to know him. Growing up in Kansas as I did, I had never skied in my life. But in a moment of insanity, I decided it was time to try. So I got some skis, joined the Ski Club and set out. And Paul drew the short straw and became my instructor...lucky him.

I must have provided him with hours of laughter over this klutz from Kansas who could never seem to get his skis untangled.

But Paul was the soul of patience and a fountain of good advice. And from that, I learned something more valuable than mere skiing. I learned the value of patient forbearance in teaching, and the humility to believe that the most unpromising pupil could actually succeed.

I actually came to enjoy skiing, but gained even more from Paul's practical wisdom.

In appreciation,

Dave Bodde
