Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Guenter Hennig on December 28, 2012:

The times I knew Gene we were playing soccer. As fullback he had a terrific kick when he kicked the ball from the goal line. One day in the fall he and I stopped by the football practice field next to the soccer field and decided to try kicking a football. After a few attempts we showed that we could outdistance anyone on the football team! Unfortunately Coach Palone, the soccer coach, saw us too and he was not pleased nor in a gentle mood of forgiveness. For certain we never tried kicking a football again.

I also remember Gene's red cheeks when the weather was a little nippy and we had practiced or played for a while.

Of all the sermons I have listened to, the one that I can remember was given by Fr. Ed whom we met in Atlanta in the '90s. He used to say that after we die and stand before God, God turns to us and smiles and says: "My dear, dear boy I am so glad to see you at last. Tell me about the times during the life that I gave you that you enjoyed yourself. Tell me the good times that you had and how it felt to be alive."

Gene, I think you will be able to relate some wonderful stories.

With much thanks for your friendship, you remain in my prayers.

G.H.
