Curtis Dean Churchwell

West Point, 1965

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Preston Hughes on April 4, 2009:

Curt and I met when we both joined H-2 "Cow" year. He being from Arkansas (Hope) and I from Mississippi, we had many shared likes and southern characteristics. He was easygoing, some might have even said lackadaisical. But on the athletic field he was anything but!! He was a primary reason why H-2 had a great intramural football team our senior year, finishing as Brigade runner-up.

In the spring of 1965, after we got our cars, he and I shared trips to NYC, to see the Yankees play. Once when I lost the keys to my flashy Ford Falcon we had to pay $50 for a wild taxi ride back to West Point. (As I recall he had an equally flashy American Motors Gremlin.)

We were both assigned to Ft Carson for our first unit assignment in the fall of 1965. So we continued our friendship there until I left for Vietnam in the spring of 1966. I saw him only once or twice between that time and 2005, including a good visit with him and Lenny at Ft Sill in 1970. So it was great to see him and Lenny again at our class reunion in 2005.

I'll always remember Curt as a solid, good man from a wonderful family in Hope and also a special friend from my last two years at West Point. Ann and I extend to Lenny and family our love and our deepest condolences.
