Walter Stanley Piskun

West Point, 1966

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lou Coatney, usma x1968 on December 26, 2016:

I was a plebe in New Cadet Barracks, Summer 1964. I have a vivid, funny memory of Mr. Piskun - an upperclassman squad leader in our platoon - personally inspiring me and my roommate Bob Gora during bayonet training out on the Plain.

In early 1965, I decided to go against the heartfelt wishes of my family - my father, especially - and many friends and to resign from the Academy. Wally (who was in a different, academic year company then) came by our room and quietly, reassuringly talked with me and wished me all the best.

It was one of the kindest things anyone has done to - for - me in my entire life.

I am not surprised to learn that he became a brilliant and dedicated neurosurgeon. His death was another heavy loss for 1966 and our society.
