Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robbie Weill Patterson on March 5, 2012:

I met Mac (Boyd) at West Point when he was In his third year. He was amazingly handsome with a beaming smile and blue eyes. (He smiled like Warren Beatty.) We laughed and danced together like two little kids. We could barely keep our hands to ourselves. That got us in trouble as Mac got written up for PDA after most of our weekends together. That meant that he had to walk the area!! I'm not totally sure what that meant, but I can imagine. He had an amazing smile that could melt anyone's bad humor! Since my family was from Westchester County, less than an hour away, I kept his blue Chevrolet Corvair at my parents house for us to drive on weekends.

We got pinned!!!! Which in those days was pre-engagement. I loved him dearly but the differences in our lifestyle and the war made our relationship difficult.

I have pictures of us at graduation with his three sisters and his younger brother and of the cadet with the most devilish smile and the highest principles you could ever ever imagine. I remember you Mac with love in my heart and a big smile on my face. I'm sorry, truly sorry you died at the prime of your life. And I'm sure you served your Country with style and Grace. I have thought of you gently over these years as one does a first love.

Lovingly Always,
Robbie Weill Patterson
