Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Greg Banner on May 30, 2005:

Col Harris was my first regular company tactical officer as a cadet (H-4). Every officer there teaching at the time was a Vietnam veteran and I stood in awe of all of them. Col Harris, though, stood out. He had a passion for leadership, understanding his own skills, and trying to teach leadership to others. He happily shared his own combat experiences, including the story of when his new company basically mutinied and refused to move (in Vietnam). He made it all real. The 4th Regiment had a slack reputation at the time; there was nothing slack about H-4 and I would not have wanted to be in any other company. Col Harris moved to the leadership department at West Point and onward from there. It was with great sadness that I heard of his getting sick and rapid passing while assigned to the leadership department at Ft Leavenworth. In his honor there is a plaque at Ft Leavenworth, as well as an award given every year at West Point. He is among the handfull of truly great men I had the honor of knowing in the Army. The Army lost a great one.
