Raymond John Winkel

West Point, 1967

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert E Keenan, Jr, LTC, US Army, (Ret) on September 3, 2011:

Ray Winkel was one of my best friends at West Point. We were in Company H-1 the first two years. We shared many classes and many good times. And during plebe years, some interesting times.

I remember especially when Ray was having some difficulties with the indoor Obstacle Course. He was very concerned that he would not be able to complete it. But he dragged me to the gym many times. We worked out for hours and hours, practicing and struggling, especially with the rope climb. When the day finally came, he passed with seconds to spare. He was estatic.

I will never forget the weekend we spent at his parent's house in Baltimore. I was welcomed warmly by his family and enjoyed not only the hostipality but also the excellent food.

More recently, Ray came with Sally to Boise State University for a Physics symposium. Lorrie and I had a very enjoyable visit with Ray and Sally over dinner with Darrel and Rosanne Mooney.

Ray was one of those people who could get along with everybody. His depth of knowledge allowed him to discuss almost any topic with clarity of vision and depth of understanding. A truly remarkable man.

Farewell, my friend. You made this world a better place.

May you rest in peace.
