Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David M. Snyder '67 on September 14, 2011:

Ray and I spent our last two years at the Academy in F-1. For a time we were roomates and it was a joy to share time with Ray. He was bright, witty and the best roommate anyone could possibly have. I was somewhat intimidated by his science prowess, but he was a saviour more than once when I had difficulty in these subjects. I like to think that once in a while I helped him in the humanities and political sciences where he actually had to study, but maybe it was just Ray recognizing my need to return the favor. It would be just like him.

Ray and I were in the same Plebe Boxing section. Although Ray was in great shape and very strong, he did not grasp the principles of the ring as well as he did the Lab and more than once he saw stars. Of course having Bobby Whaley in our section didn't help. Even though he was down often, he was never out and was an inspiration to all of us; he never gave up.

The last time I saw Ray was at an F-1 Reunion at Tom Petrie's ranch in Colorado. He was as fit and trim as ever and was in great spirits, with that ever present grin on his face the entire time.

Be thou at peace, my friend.
