Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Natalie Winn Birchfield on December 11, 2011:

I knew BG Winkel through his loving and devoted wife Sally, as a Second Class Cadet, I was detailed one summer to Cadet Supply. BG Winkel pinned my 2LT Bars when I was commissioned after graduation and Sally was by my side before I walked down the aisle in the Cadet Chapel. Through BG Winkel's leadership and encouragement, I was inspired to achieve and accomplish at a level I thought not possible. Over the years, he spoke wise counsel into each of my major life decision points. His mystical passion for physics inspired me to ponder the hidden elements of the universe and even read physics books for "fun".

Recently, I met a 2002 USNA graduate pursuing an Army career in the nuclear discipline through a physics PhD. Why? A phone conversation with BG Winkel had forever altered the course of this young man's life. I am not surprised as BG Winkel was a true warrior, scholar, poet and friend. He embodied for me the ideals of Duty, Honor, Country and visiting West Point won't be the same without him or his ever-faithful, radiant, exuberant, selfless Sally.

It is my hope to see you again, my friend.
