Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Engstrom on October 17, 2001:

Kingsley was my Beast Barracks Platoon Leader the Summer of 1974. Kingsley was a good guy and I remember him letting us eat when we sat on his table. That may sound kind of funny to someone not familiar with the environment of what represented Beast Barracks in 1974, but there were members of the Class of '74 who were his classmates who thought starvation was a leadership attribute. I remember reciting poop (also known as "Fourth Class Knowledge") in his room, and him saying, "This may seem kind of silly to have to memorize this, but it is something that people think is important, so you need to do it, and do it right." I remember at the time thinking, this is a 'real' guy, and one of the few upper classman that I immediately respected because he earned my respect, not because he demanded it. Throughout the four weeks that he was our Platoon Leader, I can say that he did everything he could to ensure we would be good leaders.
