Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steve Farmer on September 13, 2004:

I met Cadet Castro a week after I arrived at West Point and never remember seeing him again. More than any other person, he is the reason that I made it through. He was a counselor in my Beast. My dream of West Point had just met the harsh reality of West Point. I was ready to quit. Several of my classmates had figured that I was gone after my outburst at the lunch table. Cadet (I never knew him as Duane) Castro made me remember why I had come to West Point and helped me hold on to my dream. There were different trials over the course of the next four years and through my military career, but none were as pivotal as the one that Cadet Castro help me face. I was saddened to hear of his passing when I looked at the back of that Assembly magazine all those years ago. I am certain that he was an excellent officer; I already know that he was a good man. I will forever be indebted to him for helping me hold on.
