Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Wade Jost posting on behalf of Charlie's nehpew on January 31, 2023:

This essay was written by Charlie's nephew, Charles R. Moses -- well said young man! No doubt Charlie is smiling down on you always.

"1st Lt. Charles P. Moses began his move toward a military career by playing football at United States Military Academy West Point. After graduation he was stationed at Fort Hood. In 1988 on a routine training mission above Chico, TX, his military helicopter crashed. He was one of 10 soldiers killed that day. My dad's brother, Uncle Charlie, has had a larger than life presence in the Moses family since before I was born.

Being named after a man like Uncle Charlie carries a certain responsibility that I have taken very seriously. There isn't any particular moment that he impacted my life, rather his spirit and legend have had a hand in shaping me. The work ethic he displayed in his football career alone is noteworthy, but when you add to that the dedication and sacrifice of his young life to the military, he is truly inspirational. Uncle Charlie was a young man that personified hard work, no excuses, and never wavered from his commitments.

I hope that some of these same traits are evident in myself. I have done my best to follow through with commitments that I make, even when they have stopped being fun or easy. I also pride myself in my own work ethic. These qualities are just a few of the takeaways from the stories about my Uncle Charlie. He was presented to myself and my siblings as an example of a hero, and that is what he will always be to me. It takes quite a man to have this type of impact on my life even though I never got the opportunity to meet him. 1st Lt. Charles Moses and I will always be linked by our names, but I also hope that those who knew him will recognize some of his qualities in me."
