Be Thou At Peace

"Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6

This verse of scripture has been on my mind as I've been thinking about and remembering the child and teenage Marc I saw growing up over his formative years. Marc was blessed to be raised in a Christian home primarily by his mother who strove to instill in Marc and his two younger sisters strong moral values. I helped to guide Marc as his Sunday school teacher and later as his youth group director through his junior high and senior high years then watching him proudly advance to West Point and beyond.

In those early years, this big guy was looked up to by younger kids and he wasn't afraid to be there for them and make them feel important. Already he showed signs of strong effective leadership, although as his youth leader, I was often on the receiving end of his jokes and wisecracks but never in a hurtful way but always respectful and good natured.

In his adult years, I wasn't able to maintain a close relationship with him although Facebook helped us stay in touch in later years. As far as I could tell, Marc wasn't able to do much in the way of public displays of his faith but I believe from the bottom of my heart, that Marc never forgot the lessons of faith he learned and practiced in his youth as evidenced by the positive contributions he made in the countless people he encountered in every walk of life. In this way, he witnessed to his faith all of the time.

I know today that Marc is wrapped in the loving arms of the God he never lost his belief in and his spirit will visit and touch the lives of everyone he loved and who loved him for years to come until the day we are all united again in God's heavenly kingdom.
