Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Shelly (Dye) Matautia on March 2, 2009:

Dear Jeanne,
You are a great friend, a super mother, an awesome soldier, a terrific role model, a wonderful wife and daughter, a very giving, fun and out going person who we will all truly miss. I am forever grateful for the unexpected phone call last month, where we chatted about what a Regimental Tactical Officer does, the cadets you sponsor, your role as OIC for the swim team, time at the Academy, Sarah's volleyball, John's ventures with scuba and the great news about Hutch's retirement and promotion! You were so upbeat and in your glory to be back at the Academy. Thank you again for that great phone call! Thank you also for your friendship while we were in Korea. You introduced me to the Chosun gift shop, to the mud ladies, the teak man and Korean pottery shopping trips. My house is filled with treasures reminding me of you! Thanks also for the morning runs and work outs. It was fun and kept me going! I'll never forget the first family run we took the kids on.. the infamous Point Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. Yep we were both worried about the kids making it, but like little troopers, they made one by one.. even Austin just in front of the trail vehicle. It was great working with you. You were a great team mate and taught me a lot about PBD 725! YUCK!! But those were the good ole days! Then you had to leave and off you went work in DISA, where I introduced you to my friend JoAnne. I loved the photos of your new home and all your pretty treasures you so beautifully displayed! You always managed to keep in touch through a note on your blackberry while traveling home or an unexpected gift you so thoughtfully picked out! You are always so thoughtful! I only got one shopping request.. I hope those sun glasses survived! And I'll never forget the directions on where to buy them! Lol (attache)..I thought it was a shop and didn't realize it was from any Korean man set up as a vendor on the street.. we got a good laugh out of that. Your time at DISA went by quickly and before I knew it you were off to school and then to take command! Once again, always sending notes via the black berry while you were on road trips to see your folks or off on some other little adventure. I didn't know until recently that you were in the good care of COL Penha during your command! I have known him since I was a 2LT and now our paths have crossed again. It is strange that he is the one who gave me the sad news about your death. We were all hoping that you'd be ok and go home soon. Your illness brought Nora, Shelly, Diane and I back in frequent contact, something we had let go a bit over the years. I am sure God has a perfect plan for you and that your new journey is about to begin! Don't forget to keep in touch as you always have! We'll know that you are watching over us as you have for so many years! Take care my dear friend! We will miss you so much!
Love always,
Shelly Matautia
