Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Doug Sutter on January 25, 2002:

I was at NTC on an OPFOR Augmentee rotation when Marty passed. Being in A-4 I lived on the same floor or in close proximity to Marty for 4 years. I was attached to Bill Walski's (D-4 '89)OPFOR company when we heard the news. Here are the details as I heard it at the NTC when Marty passed.

He was OCing an Engineer Company from Ft. Benning. On a night movement, the company was going out of sector. Instead of just letting them go out of sector Marty tried to flag the first vehicle in the convoy down. Unfortunately it was an AVLB and the driver and crew either did not see him or were asleep. They ended up running over Marty.

It really hit home to be in the middle of the desert and find out one of your classmates had been killed only a few kilometers from you. I remember talking to Bill Walski about it when it happened. You were doing the right thing Marty. Putting yourself at risk to help fellow soldiers. Most of us have been to a training center and know the risks that are involved going there. Marty you did the right thing, and you took care of the soldiers in that company. Rest in Peace.
