Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Troy McCann on March 22, 2002:

Elissa died in a car accident on the autobahn while driving to PT. I read the story in the "Stars and Stripes" and spilled my coffee. I had seen her just a week before and couldn't believe it.

I ran into Elissa in Germany early in 1991. Her unit had recently arrived for a security stint at Patrick Henry Village in Mannheim, Germany. The security measures were in place due to Desert Sheild/Storm. Since I was deploying, I offered her the use of my appartment, which she accepted. I returned to find a bottle of Crown Royal, a thank-you note and an appartment much cleaner than I remembered.

These were unnecessary (but much appreciated) gestures that I think capture the kind of person Elissa was, and that is how I like to remember her.
