Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James Brindle on February 15, 2001:

The last time I talked to Nate Garaas, he was explaining to me how he got busted for sneaking a civilian girl into the barracks. Nate taught her how to salute, but forgot to notify her to stand up if an officer came to the room. The night ended before it began with the Academic OC asking the young lady, perched on Nate's desk, "Are you even a cadet?"
I do not know how Nate passed, but he will always bring a smile to my face. He would cross my mind at least once a week; just last week I planned on emailing him...
I remember his sarcastic, guttural "huah", and his overuse of words like "poignant".
His WKDT show lasted only 6 weeks because the Reg. XO heard his interview with a female cadet describing GYN exams at the medical clinic (If you missed his show firstie year, you never had any reason to listen to cadet radio).
I can still hear his womanly groans every time he smacked the ball in Dr. Butler's handball class. It is impossible to hit a handball when your eyes are filled with tears from laughing at Nate.
Pound for pound, no one talked more trash about intramural rugby, or was more thilled to be called the "hooker".
I have never met anyone else that knows so much about 80s television stars and shows. The Jonathan Taylor Thomas poster, on the back of his door plebe year, did nothing but mess with the upperclassmen's heads.
Nate Garaas ruled the plebe forum on our unix email. Many a classmate fell victim to his fake trivia: Who did Mondale defeat in the 84 Democratic Primary? Senator John Holmes
Somewhere, Nate Garaas is doing his silly little dance and laughing at us all. Hopefully he would find this eulogy "poignant".
