West Point, 2001

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by LTC (Retired) Eric Zimmerman on January 27, 2005:

The uncle mentioned in the newspaper article before this who had attended West Point was my roommate while at the Academy. Living together with Joe Fenton's uncle Pat for 4 years at West Point I also had the opportunity to get to know his grandfather who also graduated from West Point. All I can say is the saying "the acorn does not fall far from the tree" is very true in this case. Both his grandfather and uncle were and are the finest of human beings - loving of life and caring for others. It is no wonder that Joe Fenton decided to go to the Academy - what was the common bond of these two fine people - West Point... I was teaching engineering at West Point when Joe Fenton and his family visited with me and my family on our front porch prior to entering the Academy. He stood out at the time as a special young man and over the four years we spent together at West Point that was only further solidified as I monitored his progress in his classes and his out of class activities. He was an outstanding running back on the light weight football team - and though tripped up with a knee injury I recall him being captain of the team. He was also president of the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) during his senior year - in the department I taught in. Having six daughters of my own - I also heard how drop dead handsome this young man was and how friendly and gentlemanly he was. Joe Fenton was certainly one of the finest cadets I or my family had the pleasure of knowing the 10+ years I taught there. The last time we saw Joe Fenton was on our back porch when he came by to say goodbye the afternoon after graduation in May of 01. As always - thoughtful, humble, gracious - thanking us for what we had done for him. Though we never got to know his parents very well - the job that they did in raising this fine young man is a monument to their own character and love. Joe Fenton - you will not be forgotten. EZ
