Leonard Mallonee Cowherd III

West Point, 2003

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Steen on May 19, 2004:

I met Lenny shortly after our first academic year at West Point began. Although I left West Point only 2 years later, I'll never forget his classic laugh. The Phantasms had some great times together, and pulling pranks and jokes on each other were some of the best. Sometimes my antics were beyond ridiculous, but I remember that Lenny was always laughing. You seriously could not upset the guy, that's how upbeat and happy he was. He was a great friend and, as stated by others, impeccably loyal. I also remember him as a very hard-working cadet. When I'd come by his room or see him in the library, he was always hard at work. I believe that our country and our military--and what each of these institutions represent--were what Lenny lived for. He saw his destiny as greatness in both of these categories, and he achieved it.

Here's to a great friend, a genuine patriot, and a true Virginian and American hero.
