Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Alan Renshaw on October 11, 2002:

Bob Arnold and I became acquainted in September 1952 when he lived across the hall during plebe year in the 4th Division in Central Barracks in B-1. Bob was three years older, and that was a lot when I was 18 and straight out of high school. Bob came out of the regular army, and had an artists flair for life that had no equal. A trip to NYC for a weekend promised adventures that I could never pull off alone, and resulted in memories for a number of us in B-1 and neighboring companies that we still laugh about! Bob had many facets, especially a background in music that only revealed itself a couple of years later during one of our summer trips. Bob was potentially a "first section" type academically, but his love for fun in the room during study hours neary made me a turnout as I had to grind it all out. We ended up very good friends during cadet years, and I was dismayed, as was our other roommate, Pete Verfurth when Bob decided to resign about October of our first class year. Bob made our cadet life fun during those periods when there wasn't much fun to it. Regretfully, I was unable to keep up much with Bob's very successful family and career at Boeing in Seattle later in life. Bob Arnold was very much a part of my cadet life, and I miss his engaging smile and spirit of adventure that taught us all not to take the rules, or ourselves too seriously. He has earned his way into the Long Grey Line...well done, friend!
