Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Adam Nordin on May 30, 2022:

Dan.

13 years. You're making me feel old!

Much has happened since we last spoke. We had our first child (his name is Jasper, but we call him 'Tank'). I'm recovering from COVID. And I was on the last flight out of Afghanistan.

As the brigade ops officer for 1/82, I was fortunate enough to be with the team that flew in and then evacuated out of Afghanistan last August..

I know it wasn't Iraq, where you last were, but I thought of you, and others, when I flew out on that last night. If only this day could have come more than a decade sooner. And... was it all worth it?

So many thoughts and feelings of and for those like you who gave it all for our country and for a war that we still can't say was really worth it.

You know... the Middle East and the latest pandemic are much the same- the antidote - the solution to the problem - is just as complex and uncertain as is the problem. Now, we have another brigade standing on the borders of Ukrain and Poland, showing solidarity with NATO partners as Russia attempts to sweep Ukraine.

Dan- the world you left has not changed much. If anything it's even more complex. The dangers the military now must face are less predictable than before. But, as I always say, I am comforted knowing that you are keeping a close watch on us- keeping an eye on things, showing us the path, and shining a light in the dark. When I stop and reflect how fortunate I am to have had you in my life, I know that no amount of time will ever undo your memory.

Best to you, brother. You are not forgotten.
