Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Adam Nordin on May 31, 2021:

Tim,

It's 2021- 10 years since you left us. Shortly after that, I saw your face on the wall in Kandahar on my way into theater. It was my third deployment, I was no stranger to that country or the ways of war. But when I saw your face, my heart and soul sank to the bottom of the Earth.

I hadn't spoken to you in years, but I hadn't forgotten about you. You were sharp. You knew what you wanted from life. You had much to give to the world. You were exceptionally fit and confident. The military was for you. And, when I graduated, you made it a point to give me my first salute. I saw that photo not too long ago. And I remember that moment. I think I held it for an awkward few seconds- forgetting that I was supposed to end the gesture first. It's a silly. small moment. But I remember it well, and I share that memory with you.

There is no doubt in my mind you were being aggressive and uncompromising against the enemy. Kandahar was unforgiving. Even with the best information and resources, there were no guarantees.

You may be gone, but you are not forgotten. Not only you as a person, but all the qualities and strengths you brought to the world. I push hard, still in the Army, because I know people like you are out there - working hard and harder to prepare their troops for that moment they meet the enemy.

-Adam
