When my father, John Merrill ('34) came home to Utica, NY on his first leave from West Point he brought his cadet Schimmelpfennig to meet my greatgrandmother, who was hard of hearing. My father said, "Grandmother, I want you to meet Mr. Schimmelpfennig." Greatgrandmother, putting up her hearing horn said, "What's that son?" "GRANDMOTHER, THIS IS MR SCHIMMELPFENNING." GGgrandmother says with a sigh, "Sorry son, it sounds like 'shimmelpfennig' to me." |
