Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kym Schure on August 27, 2021:

While going through some old documents within my fathers papers, who was himself a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, I found an article about his cousin Irvin Schimmelpfennig published near the time of his death in Luzon, Phillipines. An accomplished man that gave his life for his country in WWII. Colonel Irvin R. Schimmelpfennig died in combat, killed by an enemy sniper on February 4, 1945 while actively commanding troops, endangering his own life and saving the lives of his men. Colonel Schimmelpfennig was an Oxford Rhodes Scholar, graduating from West Point Military Academy top of his class in 1930. At the time of his death he was attached to the 11th Airborne Division Headquarters Pacific Theater. During his service Col. Schimmelpfennig received the following Decorations and Awards:

Distinquished Service Cross
Silver Star Valor
(2) Purple Hearts
Legion of Merit
Bronze Star Valor
American Defense Medal
Air Medal.
Colonel Schimmelpfennig is buried in the American Military Cemetary in Luzon, Phillipines.
