| Son of Judge Robert William Porter and Lois Virgina Freeman Porter.Promoted to permanent two-star General in June 1960.Named by Pres John F Kenedy to be senior United States Army member of the Military Staff Committee of the United Nations.Named to Command of the First Army at its headquarters on Governors Island. The First Army includes all Army troops in New York,May 1,1964.Responsible for United States military efforts throughout South and Central America, Army and Air Force schools in the Canal Zone ... Commander of the United States Southern Command in Panama,1966. Spent four years as commander inchief of the us Command before retiring from the Army in 1969 as a fourstar General.Died in a Charlottesville ,Virginia hospital. |
