Robert William Porter

West Point, 1930

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Wallace Earl Walker on November 3, 2012:

Bob Porter was a fine, gentle, and kind man who became a four-star general, a warrior who led soldiers in war and peace. He was the archetype of the best leaders the Army has ever known.

As a Father and Husband, he was beloved. His wife Margaret preceded him in death in 1973, at the age of 59. His four children were: Henrik Peterson Porter, Celia Trumbull Porter Dollarhide, Susan Porter Walker, and Robert William Porter III. He had three children in law: Wallace Earl Walker (husband of SPW), Deborah Donniger Porter (wife of RWP III), and Charles Lewis Dollarhide (husband of CTPW). And he had four grandchildren: Allen Dale Walker, Kathryn Margaret Walker, Jacob Porter, and Jeffrey Porter. All his family were devoted to him.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about him after he retired was that he was an award-winning tree farmer and a master at rooting and growing rhododendrons. He started a family farm that spanned 350 acres outside Madison Virginia. He was active in supporting many organizations in Madison County.

By temperament, he was quiet, thoughtful, always respectful, and an excellent judge of character. He was curious and interested in local, national and international events. No doubt this curiosity was abetted by his initial service as a cavalry officer, service in North Africa and Italy during World War II, and thereafter in Korea, the Middle East, and Panama.
