Shortly before she died at home on March 4, 1990, in Baltimore, Maryland, Mrs. Maria S. Hesser discussed with her husband, Major Dan D. Hesser, his ensuring that their Memories of Personal Kindness by Maj. Gen. D'Orsa, Deputy Commanding General (DCG), U.S. Army Ryukyu Islands on the Island of Okinawa in 1965, be entered here and on his Memory Book page for the USMA Class of 1932, i.e., "In whose memory, Contributions have been made to West Point by: "On behalf of Mrs. Maria Shimabukuro Hesser (1940-1990), and her husband, Major Dan D. Hesser MBA CGSC LOM, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USMACV 1966-67). While a civilian employee of U.S. Army Ryukyu Islands, the then Miss Shimabukuro (later Mrs. Hesser) and Specialist Four Hesser of the 29th Army Band (commanded by CW4 Louis Bordok), were united in marriage approved by Maj. Gen. D'Orsa as a direct result of the DCG's personal correspondence with Specialist Hesser's father, Captain Harv Hesser [Infantry; OCS (Benning School for Boys) 9-18-1943 (Maj. Gen. Leven C. Allen, Commandant); World War II (ETO London, France, Belgium, Berlin December '44-'46) & Quartermaster Corps; Korean War (USFA Salzburg/Livorno '51-'53)]."
